Rockstar Says GTA 6's Mature Relationship Content Has to Be "Done Right"

Rockstar has discussed how GTA 6 will handle mature relationship themes between Jason and Lucia, saying the studio wants to approach the subject carefully rather than relying on gimmicks.

Speaking to IGN, Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson explained that the developers spent a lot of time refining how the relationship between the two protagonists works. He said the characters feel natural together and that players who want to role-play their relationship should be able to do so.

According to Nelson, intimacy is an important part of a relationship, which is why Rockstar wanted to make sure it fits naturally within the story and characters.

The developers reportedly went through multiple iterations while working out what felt appropriate for the game. Nelson also suggested that Rockstar wants to avoid turning these moments into awkward or overly game-like mechanics.

This approach is particularly interesting considering Rockstar’s history with GTA: San Andreas and the infamous Hot Coffee controversy. That situation involved unused content that was later accessed through modifications, creating a major controversy around the game.

GTA 6 is expected to have a more mature rating than some previous entries in the series, although Rockstar has not revealed exactly how all of its mature relationship content will work.

The relationship between Jason and Lucia is also a much bigger part of GTA 6’s story, with players able to influence how close the two characters become throughout the game.

Rockstar appears to be aiming for something that feels like a natural part of their story rather than simply adding mature content for shock value.
